Statue of the week: number 26

March 30, 2011

A return to the National Theatre this week (soon we’ll have covered all the statues in this area!).  The subject of this statue is not an actor or playwright though.

This is Johan Halvorsen (1864 – 1935), a composer, conductor and violinist.  He worked with various orchestras, at educational institutions before finally becoming the conductor at the National Theatre in 1899.  He held this posistion for 30 years, until he retired.  He composed both incidental music for the theatre and other works for orchestra and chamber groups.

Oh, and doesn’t he have a grand moustache!
