Statue of the week: number 31

May 16, 2011

This time we take a look at one of Norway’s sporting heroines – Sonja Henie (1912 – 1961). Sonja was an Olympic champion in figure skating three times (1928, 1932, 1936).  She won the world championships 10 times and the Europeans 6 times.  When she was at home in Oslo she trained at Frogner Stadium which is where this statue is located. Henje had connections to the Nazi party and even though  she became a US citizen in 1941 and supported the US war effort, she never spoke against the Nazi’s or for the Norwegian Resistance Movement.  She became a film star in Hollywood, was married 3 times (with numerous other love interests) and died on a flight from Paris to Oslo due to leukemia.
