Statue of the week: number 34

June 14, 2011

A return to Norway’s skating champions this week and Oscar Mathisen (October 4, 1888 – April 10, 1954).  Oscar was a speed skater and achieved 14 world records, with his record for the 1,500m standing for 23 years.  His life ended tragically, he killed his wife who had suffered from depression for many years and then himself.  This statue was erect in 1959 outside Frogner Stadium (an ice rink during the winter and football pitches in the summer).
