Statue of the week: number 37

June 30, 2011

This is the person Oslo is named after – Christian IV.  What do you mean?  How can Oslo be named after someone called Christian?

Well, when Christian IV was king of Norway and Denmark he decided, as he did with several other places, to name the city after himself.  He moved Oslo to an area near Akershusfestning (Akershus fortress) in 1624 after the original site had been destroyed by fire several times

The statue is located in Stortovet/Stortorget, the city’s main square.  It serves as the city’s flower market and is on the Oslo version of Monopoly.  As well as the flower stalls Christian overlooks the domkirke (cathedral) and currently some Ethiopean refugees living in a tent.
